about

Hexatonic Stretch uses the same source material as Octave Stretch. However instead of the pitch being dropped in octaves, the source was resampled into an ancient Greek 11 limit hexatonic scale attributed to Terpander of Lesbos, circa 700 BCE.* The quasi-random pitches and rhythms of the lawn chimes are forced into Terpander’s scale and the tempo ratios between the lines can clearly be heard as they slowly diverge. I have used this scale in a variety of pieces since the 1980s for its simplicity and unique sound.

* The Greek Aulos by Kathleen Schlesinger, published in 1939. The steps of this scale are the following ratios: 1/1, 11/10, 11/9, 11/8, 11/7, 11/6. The scale is used by Greek Aulos and bag pipes, used today mostly on the island of Kalymnos. None of the scale steps beside the root correspond to any note in the western 12 tone scale.
