A sound installation created for an Art exhibition by Amy Webb at the Galerie le Domaine, Providence, RI - September - November 2022.
The sound design for this installation is a montage of several birdsong related pieces composed over more than twenty-five years. They use a wide variety of instruments and techniques; the common thread is the use of sounds from our world, which are usually structural foundations for the pieces.
As artists we are inspired by our love of birds and birdsong. As we discuss our musical and visual creative process, the technical parallels quickly became apparent. The use of collage, transformation of source material, layering, density and finishing (mastering) are all parts of our common language. The compositional problems and processes are also remarkably similar, except that electronic composition allows me to save different versions of a piece, while paint is less forgiving.
Pieces included in this montage are:
1. Aviary Nocturne – 1999, from Mockingbird Suite
2. Rendezvous Over Morgan Creek – 2018, from Soporific Environments
3. Crows on the Swing Set – 2021, from Forebodings
4.. Lullaby for Flannery – 2011
5. Day Valley Evening – 1995, from Archaic Future
6. Lansing Bridge – 2018, from Soporific Environments
7. Through the Veil – 2009, from Arcana by Outspan
8. The Raven’s Premonition – 2022, from Forebodings
