about

In 1991, this was cutting edge. Networking computers via MIDI!

This music has much in common with Jazz, Rock and Blues, and you will hear those idioms woven into the texture of the music. The point of departure is the addition of a computer network running custom designed software that is an integral part of the improvising process.

The three "Things" are different combinations of a basic set of software modules, each using a distinct and often atonal organizational logic. It is often difficult to know who is playing what instrument because of timbrel overlap such as acoustic and electronic piano, and the fact that all MIDI instruments are available to all players.

"The Name of the Rat Catcher" uses vocal pattern recognition techniques to store pitch and volume contours of sentences for use as synthesizer control parameters. All electronic sounds are generated from analysis of the spoken voice while Robert and Aric improvise on the piano and electric guitar
following directions in the text.
