about

The word Soporific is derived from Somnus, the Roman god of sleep. His Greek counterpart is Hypnos. According to Ovid, Somnus had a thousand sons, the Somnia or dream shapes, who appear in dreams mimicking many forms. Ovid named three of the sons of Somnus: Morpheus, who brings dreams of people, Phobetor who brings dreams of beasts, and Phantasos who brings dreams of inanimate objects.

Soporific Environments is a drowsy composition in four parts, each of the four sections begins with a field recording processed and mixed with other material from my archives, similar to the use of a cantus firmus in Renaissance Polyphony. The techniques used are digital versions of classic musique concrète such as speed change, reverse envelope, filtering, feedback and convolution. The intent is to transform the field recordings into evocations of sonic memories.

Part I: A Blustery Night
Part II: The Rain Museum
Part III: Lansing Bridge
Part IV: Rendezvous Over Morgan Creek
